Packaging
Royal A-ware is committed to minimising the environmental impacts associated with packaging materials and packaging waste, while upholding the highest standards of product quality and food safety. Guided by circularity principles, we prioritise sustainable sourcing, reduce overall material use, and maximise recyclability. Through these efforts, we aim to keep valuable resources in use for as long as possible and reduce our dependency on raw materials.
Impacts, risks and opportunities
As part of our DMA, we identified the following material IROs, distinguishing between upstream, our own operations and downstream:
Impacts
-
Actual negative impact due to the use of (virgin) raw materials in packaging, which can contribute to resource depletion, deforestation and increased greenhouse gas emissions.
-
Actual negative impact on the environment due to the processing of plastic packaging material, which can contribute to environmental pollution.
-
Actual negative impact on the amount of waste for our customers and the end user due to our current packaging practices (e.g., pallets, wrapping films and plastic packaging).
Risk
Risk of cost increase due to stricter sustainability requirements for packaging as a result of the regulations from PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation).
Our approach
Royal A-ware's packaging approach is based on our circularity principles. It involves the following practices:
-
Prevent
-
Reduce
-
Choose more sustainable resources/materials
Our packaging policy was updated in 2025 to align with the targets of the PPWR, a proposed regulation designed to ensure that all packaging in the EU market is reusable or recyclable by 2030. The PPWR also makes the use of post-consumer recycled (PCR) material mandatory. The scope of the policy are the dairy activities of Royal A-ware.
The managing directors of the divisions are responsible for the implementation of the policy. It is important to note that Royal A-ware produces primarily products for private label customers. Customers therefore have the final choice when it comes to packaging. We help customers make informed and responsible decisions by providing a range of recyclable and sustainable packaging options. We proactively source equivalent sustainable alternatives to existing packaging.
Objectives and actions
Our objective is to minimise environmental and social impacts, including resource depletion, deforestation and greenhouse gas emissions, by optimising the use of raw materials in our packaging and reducing plastic packaging and waste in our operations, Additionally, we aim for compliance with the PPWR.
Our action plan is under development and is expected to be finalised in 2026. As such, we do not report on our actions in 2025.
Targets and achievements
Royal A-ware's target in relation to packaging was set in 2025 and aligns with the PPWR: By January 1, 2030, all packaging that Royal A-ware places on the EU market will meet a minimum recyclability rate of 70%.
We will begin measuring our progress against this target in 2026.
